Your Planetary Survival Style
What planetary type do you embody?
Everyone has a personal style that predominates, especially under pressure. This may be expressed by a particular placement or repeated theme in your birth chart – or you may simply identify with one planetary type more than another.
This guide has been written today, to share something with an astrological theme that might help keep spirits up, during this strange, surreal time. It is meant to be light hearted – please take it in the fun way it is meant! (I believe a sense of humour can help us to keep grounded). Bear in mind the guide may, nonetheless, point out some of the extremes of human behaviour, as well as special strengths. You may just find a grain of truth in there, somewhere, or (preferably) something that makes you nod or smile. A few of us will also relate to more than one planetary type, too.
Those who already know your birth chart - or the subject of astrology – well; I know you know this stuff 😊 If I left something out, made errors, and/or you want to add your interpretations, feel free to say so, in the ‘comments’!
Are you Martian?
Mars – You’re impatient. You desperately want to take action. Or you want someone else to ‘do something’. You can lash out. After you’ve lashed out, however, you usually regret it and want to move on with the good stuff. You have a warm heart and will be the first to make up, so long as you believe it doesn’t make you seem weak or vulnerable. You’re a starter and you get things done! We need your courage and restlessness, to avoid stagnancy.
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Aries or Scorpio; Mars in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
Are you Venusian?
Venus – You reach for the sweets/chocs/biscuits/cake, or hand them out. You do everything in your power to get people on side. You personally invented the charm factor. You are kind and you know how to help others feel better about themselves. You make an effort with your appearance and nice things – scents, cleanliness, candles, crystals, frills, comforts – whatever makes you feel better. Other people usually benefit when you do this, too!
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Taurus or Libra; Venus in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
Are you Mercurial?
Mercury – You think, and you talk – sometimes one without the other. It’s important to you to connect, mostly to anyone who will listen. You can struggle to disconnect, but partly because you need to hear what’s going on and offer responses. You want – and can give - reassuring words. You think up great options and have plenty of questions and suggestions. You know none of us is really stuck. It’s all progress! We just have to figure out a new idea, or a fresh plan.
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Gemini or Virgo; Mercury in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
Are you Jupiterian?
Jupiter – You want to go as far away as possible. You love to broadcast your philosophy and connect with people – preferably a large crowd, all at once. You may expect too much of situations; you easily overextend, or assume others are capable of more than they are. You can take a lot for granted; a few may even dare to accuse you of arrogance, although it’s not where you’re coming from. You have a strong need and ability to dispense wisdom. You are determined to see the bigger picture, and find the bright side.
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Sagittarius or Pisces; Jupiter in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
Are you Saturnine?
Saturn – You are cautious and want to do everything by the book. You aim to control everything and tend to impose a rule system on others and yourself. You are reserved to the point of being mean – sometimes acting like you’re not worth any extras (hey, you are!) You survive, anyway, because you are so good at making the most of bare necessities, and creating something out of very little. You will sleep ok on a rock, if necessary. Indeed, you are a rock (to many who trust you and rely on you).
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Capricorn or Aquarius; Saturn in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
Are you Uranian?
Uranus – You’re a special case. Quite unique. You respond differently to others. Going into isolation feels ok – it’s peaceful and soothing. Deep down you want to be loved, or at least acknowledged (respected, even), but the idea of anyone getting too close is pretty suffocating. The internet can provide some of your greatest lifelines. You may be able to offer remote healing or wisdom. Your cool perspective helps you avoid going into panic. You have been known to levitate.
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Aquarius; Uranus in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
Are you Neptunian?
Neptune – You go to sleep. You escape into meditation or the Mothership Connection of music. You might drink a lot, if it suits you - or stringently avoid doing so, if not. You write poetry that captures the essence of the situation and all the feelings involved (yours and others’). You dream about a better future, a world where people are kinder and more sensitive. You are an inspiration and you need to remember that; don’t hide your light under a bushel! It’s safe to come out occasionally…honestly. There will be benefits.
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Pisces; Neptune in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
Are you Plutonic?
Pluto – You remember all the reasons you didn’t like certain people (and chose to distance yourself from them). You are vindicated in recognising you were right to do so, but can allow space for those showings signs of redeeming themselves. You get rid of what you don’t need, though. You also manage to locate everything you do need, even though you might not even have realised you had it. You reinvent from what you left with. You are not beaten, even when almost dead. Nobody keeps a good Plutonian down for long!
In the chart, this might apply to planets in Scorpio; Pluto in a prominent place (Rising/on the Midheaven/close to a significant planet, like the Sun or Moon).
A place to contemplate the stars, planets, angels and tarot cards!

Twelfth House Planets
Twelfth house planets are a bit of a mystery. There are various theories about what this house really means. The old astrology books talk about this - the 12th house - as the house of downfall. When I was learning astrology my tutors sometimes described planets placed here as representing things or people lost to you - or lost to the person whose chart we were looking at. The twelfth/12th house has also been labelled the house of dreams. To an extent all of this rings true to me. Perhaps most of all, though, this resonates for me as one of the houses of secrets in the birth chart.
Everyone has a few secrets and if astrology can hint at them, it is usually thought to do so through three particular houses in the chart: the 4th, 8th and 12th houses. The 4th house often relates to family secrets, the 8th house to financial and sexual secrets and the 12th house to secrets we even keep from ourselves. You may want to think of it as the house of denial, because it is said to represent the unconscious mind and it is the contents of this part of the mind that we can often deny and ignore - those details only filtering through in dreams and passing thoughts, odd coincidences and so forth.
I think the 12th house is a bridge house - a house that really clearly sits at the edge of a doorway, the doorway to the Self, which arrives and shows itself more fully in the 1st house. So, what happens when a planet is moving through the 12th house by transit - ie, when a planet currently in the sky is moving through the 12th house area in the birth chart? I think that something so secret that it is virtually hidden from the self and the conscious mind may be trying to bubble through to the surface. This may be especially appropriate if there was a planet already in the 12th house of the chart at the time of birth. But it might be significant in the way I've described, even if that is not the case.
As an example, Venus transiting the 12th house might hint at a love affair or secret crush. Maybe the person does not yet realise that they are very drawn to someone. Or maybe they have a clue about an attraction but don't yet want to fully face it, because it would make their life very difficult (remember the theme of downfall!). To some extent this may be a painful house, a battle ground area where the unconscious mind and conscious mind are trying to connect. If you have a planet moving through this house over time, perhaps something that makes much more sense of feelings and intuitions will emerge when the planet enters into the 1st house.
It would be great to hear of your experiences of the twelfth house and planets therein, or planets transiting or progressing through this house!
Celestially yours....

Planets as Symbols, not Causal Agents
People have a lot of ideas about Astrology. Not all of those ideas always match! The view that has always made the most sense to me is of Astrology as a symbolic language - at least in the modern way that we tend to use it today.
A symbolic language means that, quite simply, the symbols used in Astrology tell us something. There are various symbols including signs (signs of the zodiac) and planetary symbols and even the individual shapes that make these up - the lines, circles, semicircles, for example - even these symbolise something. Each symbol stands for something and when we translate the meaning of that symbol and make the something relevant in a context, then we can start to make Astrology useful.
There are two views that frequently come across from people who are curious about Astrology, or have formulated some ideas about it, but who may not have looked into it in any great depth - for whatever reason. And why should they, unless it's something they want to use in some particular way?
The first view probably comes from ideas about ancient cultures and this is that the planets in Astrology have some sort of power within them, which gives them a causal relationship with people and events here on Earth. The danger of this view is that, reducing it down, it can make it seem as though people are just victims of fated. The idea that everything is "written in the stars" is linked with this view. It is perhaps quite a romantic view, some would say spiritual - but it cannot be more than a view or belief, because there is no scientific evidence to support the theory that planets (or stars) cause anything. There is some argument for a relationship between the Moon and the tides - and this can be stretched to maybe make a link between the Moon and water in humans - but this really is unique to the Moon alone!
The second view is more typically modern and that is that Astrology is somehow scientific. It is a view usually not held by scientists! However, that does not mean that every single scientist puts no store by Astrology - just that they would be unlikely to associate it with being scientific. It is perhaps easy to see why anyone might assume that there is some sort of relationship between Astrology and science, though. After all, the Greek's who contributed a great amount to the subject historically, thought they were treating it that way. It is perhaps also easy to assume that Astronomy and Astrology are one and the same thing. The fact is that, for ancient people, for a time, they were. But there has been a schism in the history of Astrology, which means that it is considered as a separate subject from Astronomy.
It is important for us to remember, then, in any modern practise of Astrology, that planets are first of all observed through the practice of Astronomy (as physical objects in the sky) and then studied by Astrologers and understood symbolically through the practice of Astrology - the reading of the language of the planets, signs, houses etc. This is usually through numbers and symbols in charts (circular diagrams plotting out the placement of planets in zodiac signs at any one time) or in tables and books such as Raphael's Astrological ephemeris, which list out those planetary positions on any particular date.
Conclusion: As Astrologers, if we are asked are planets causal agents, we really have to admit that no, they are not. Sometimes the way we talk about them - and even think about them - can make it sound like we're saying that they are causing something. But it is not true to say that a planet causes anything. Astrology is a symbolic language and it reflects what is happening around us. It is descriptive of situations, characteristics and energies. It may sum up the flavour of a situation, if we choose to read its language and interpret it. But it does not cause the situation. If we are asked if Astrology is scientific, equally, we have to say no, it is not. There is a lot of recording of data, tabulating and mathematics involved in the gathering the information we need in order to cast a chart, ready for our interpretation of its symbols. And, over time, we may observe similarities with regard to the translation of those symbols. In fact, Astrologers have done this for years and some of them have written down and passed on agreed "meanings" or interpretations for specific sets of symbols. We can read these in our text books and through other literature, or we may observe and share them in our discussions with one another about our practise of Astrology. Planets are simply part of the symbolic language of Astrology that Astrologers can become fluent in - with practice!
